Credit Scores

Credit Scores: Building and Protecting Your Financial Future

A credit score is more than just a number—it’s a reflection of financial habits that can affect everything from getting a loan to renting an apartment. This course introduces young adults to what credit scores are, how they’re calculated, and why they matter for long-term success. Participants will learn how to build good credit, avoid common mistakes, and take control of their financial reputation.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand what a credit score is – What the numbers mean and how they affect financial opportunities.

  • Learn the factors that shape a score – Payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, new credit, and credit mix.

  • See how scores are used – By lenders, landlords, and even some employers when making decisions.

  • Build credit responsibly – Using credit cards wisely, paying bills on time, and starting with small, manageable accounts.

  • Avoid damaging habits – Late payments, carrying high balances, or opening too many accounts at once.

  • Repair and improve scores – Steps to take if credit has been damaged, including debt repayment strategies and monitoring reports.

  • Monitor credit reports – Learning how to check reports for free, correct errors, and protect against identity theft.

By the end of this course, participants will have the tools to establish, maintain, and protect strong credit, giving them the confidence to make financial decisions that support both immediate needs and long-term goals.
